Ouigo Spain is celebrating! On 11 May the company marks five years since it began competing with Renfe, and on that very day it will put 5,000 tickets on sale for just €5. Will you manage to snap one up?
Next Sunday, 10 May, marks five years since Ouigo launched operations in Spain — the moment that effectively kick-started the liberalisation of high-speed rail in the country.
To mark the occasion, the company — a subsidiary of French operator SNCF — will launch a promotion on 11 May offering 5,000 tickets at €5, valid for travel up to 12 December 2026 on all its routes, available via its website and app until stocks run out.
Over this five-year period, the low-cost operator has carried 23 million passengers, invested more than €700 million, and now runs 16 trains across 15 destinations. According to CNMC data, average fares on liberalised corridors have fallen by 44% in real terms — adjusted for inflation — representing savings of €431 million for passengers, while the number of high-speed travellers grew by 77% between 2019 and 2024.
The social impact is equally significant. According to the operator, one in four Ouigo passengers had never used high-speed rail before its arrival, and 85% of its customers say they travel by train more since the market was opened up to competition.
